When I was a sorority girl in college, I was one of 24 Lambda Phi Deltas who participated and WON the Greek Week Volkswagon stuffing contest. I’m not sharing this just to impress you but to let you know that being in closed, cramped quarters with a bunch of girls doesn’t frighten me in the least. As a matter of fact, if my memory serves me correctly, I was pretty close to the bottom in the pile of bodies crammed into little Herbie the Love Bug for the mere chance to have bragging rights among the other Greeks.
This past Friday night, 64 women, one husband, one son, and I won the house stuffing contest!
Friday night was the first annual “Soles of Love in the Garden” charity event held at my home. The purpose was to bring together a dynamic group of women for an evening of wine, conversation, and philanthrophy, all which was to take place outside in my gardens. Participants were asked to bring a pair of new shoes which were being donated to local children in need.
As luck would have it, the weather forecast predicted a chance of passing showers. They were right, hence, the house stuffing contest. There is a point of no return when you are planning an outdoor event when rain is predicted but showing no visible signs of materializing. You either chicken out and cancel or gamble and roll the dice…….which is exactly what we did.
But nothing can stand between women, a good cause, and SHOES. As the rain came down, a parade of well dressed women marched up the street towards my home, toting umbrellas and bags containing the most adorable variety of children’s shoes, all chosen lovingly with care. Soon, our home was filled to the rafters with laughter, good cheer, and a resolve to not let a few unfortunate raindrops ruin an evening out.
In no time, the rain stopped, the sun came out, and the party moved outside for the remainder of the evening. As dusk turned to night, the candles were lit, the wine flowed, old friendships were renewed and new acquaintences made.
Most importantly, 81 pairs of shoes were collected so that 81 children could feel the excitement that comes when one slips on a new pair of shoes.
