As a kid, I loved the beginning of a new school year! And there was NOTHING more exciting to me than shopping for school supplies. I’m not ashamed to admit I used to drag all my purchases out every day until the first day of school just to LOOK at my new loot!
To this day, when I open a large box of 64 count Crayola crayons and take a whiff, I get a little nostalgic. And rubber cement!!! I couldn’t get enough of that (toxic) smell, which, if you know me now, probably explains a lot. (Are youngsters still allowed to use that stuff without parental controls?)
If it happened to be the “Year of the New Lunchbox,” well….. It was a heady experience because new lunchboxes didn’t happen every year in my big family.
Today was the first day of school in Washington County, Maryland. Next week, the children in Frederick County return. I’m guessing that there are some who do not share the same enthusiasm I had when I was their age. But I know the parents do!
Have a great year, kiddos! And don’t forget to be nice to the new kids!
