If I were a member of the canine species, I’d be considered a mutt. I come from German descent. I undoubtably look Irish. But my heart belongs to Italy!
I’ve had a love affair with Italy for as long as I can remember! Visiting this beautiful country has been on my bucket list long before bucket lists were even popular! This past May I finished a Masters program after five long years. As a graduation gift, my husband (whom I now affectionately call the BEST husband in the WORLD) is sending me to Italy.
There are many beautiful places in the world so you might wonder why I carry such passion for Italy. First, I never met a carb I didn’t like. There’s no pasta mountain high enough I wouldn’t climb! Second, I am a hopeless romantic in every sense of the word. I always have been and make no apologies for it! Italy is a country that oozes romance….. not necessarily the male-female kind most of us think of, but it is a county that is in love with life! I want to experience that with full abandon! Third, I talk with my hands so I should fit right in! (Although I have recently learned that Italians consider it rude if tourists talk with their hands. Uh oh! We will need to work on THAT one! Lastly, I am in love with all things Italy… flowers, Architecture, history, food, shoes, and handsome, dark haired men! (oh… come on.. I’m just writing what you’re thinking!)
I also believe in serendipity. My friend, Jackie, is ALSO in love with Italy, so much so that she recently started a business called Circa Italia. www.circaitaliacom. Check out her website! It’s gorgeous. The mission of her business is to provide trips to Italy (what a coincidence!)…. for WOMEN (what do you know.. .I’m a woman!). She is also a vendor rep for certain Italian products she loves. (Imagine that…I love to shop!) I guess you can understand now why we are friends and why Jackie is planning my first “Must Love Shoes goes to Italy” tour in the spring of 2012.
For me, part of the excitement of a trip is the planning and anticipation that preceeds travelling to a place you’ve obsessed about forever! So, that’s why I’m not going until spring. I want to make this foreplay last forever!!!!
Last week I started my Italian lessons. I plan to take them until I leave next spring. I have already learned several useful phrases: dove e bano? (Where is the bathroom?) and parli piu lentamente, per favore (slow the hell down please!) OK.. I added the hell part but it’s very intimidating to try to speak a new language to a native when they speak 100 miles a minute!
The one phrase I learned already which I assure you, I will NOT need is: “basta pasta!!!” (Enough pasta!) Those words will NEVER come out of MY mouth….because remember???? Sing it with me “ain’t no (pasta) mountain high enough……”
Stay tuned! I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about this trip since Spring is a long way away.
