Johnny and Me

October 26, 2011 by admin

It appears that very soon, I’ll be getting a new neighbor in my little town. Aside from the obvious and unfortunate repercussions this will have on my ongoing health and fitness plans, this is very good news. I applaud the entrepreneurial spirit, love supporting local business, and will certainly find a way to support our new chocolatier.

Can you imagine how easy it will now be to give directions to my home? “ohhhhh…. just look for the CHOCOLATE store and I’m in the next block!” Not even the most directionally impaired will miss the Chocolate Shop, that’s for sure!

I’ll also be able to entertain guests with little notice! (Not that I’m encouraging surprise drop-ins!) “While you’re opening that bottle of wine, I’ll just slip out for some chocolates.” Ohhhhh the possibilities are endless!

But the major reason I’m excited is because I’m now living out one of my favorite chick flick movies of ALL times: Chocolat.

If you’ve never seen Chocolat, that means only one thing: You are a man.

Let me quickly give you the movie cliff notes version:

“In 1959, a mysterious woman named Vianne (Juliette Binoche) moves with her young daughter into a small French village, where much of the community’s activities are dominated by the local Catholic church. A few days after settling into town, Vianne opens up a confectionery shop across the street from the house of worship — shortly after the beginning of Lent. While the townspeople are supposed to be abstaining from worldly pleasures, Vianne tempts them with unusual and delicious chocolate creations, using her expert touch to create just the right candy to break down each customer’s resistance. With every passing day, more and more of Vianne’s neighbors are succumbing to her sinfully delicious treats, but the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), the town’s mayor, is not the least bit amused; he is eager to see Vianne run out of town before she leads the town into a deeper level of temptation. Vianne, however, is not to be swayed, and with the help of another new arrival in town, a handsome Irish Gypsy named Roux (Johnny Depp), she plans a “Grand Festival of Chocolate,” to be held on Easter Sunday.”

Most likely, you skimmed that synopsis very quickly, so let me net it out for you:

Beautiful woman…..chocolate…….Johnny Depp.

I just had a wonderful idea for a party! Announcing movie night at the Gaver’s, featuring Johnny Depp in Chocolat. Bring your own chocolate….or there will be a field trip!
