I have long suffered from a mild form of gym-phobia. As with any form of irrational fear, my gym-phobia was not the result of any single traumatic event. No beefy bodybuilder has ever tried to kill me by holding down my weights during a bench press spot. I’ve never fallen off a treadmill. I’ve never been asked to leave for talking too much (which has occurred in other situations we won’t mention for now!) I have just never felt comfortable in the gym!
My friends Rhonda and Salyer McLaughlin recently created an awesome video for a small, private one-on-one personal training studio called In-FIT in Frederick, Maryland. Check out their inspiring video on www.infitstudio.com. They are also clients of the owner, Kip Jawish and highly recommended the studio, saying that it was not your “normal kind of gym.”
They were right!
It’s not.
Within minutes of meeting Kip, I felt compelled to confess every dietary and fitness infraction I’d committed for the past five years as if I’d just met The Pope. His non-judgmental, non-threatening demeanor confirmed that, although fitness is serious business at In-FIT, they understood people like me.
Today was my first session with Rick. Walking through the doors felt like walking into a scene from Cheers. Everyone greeted each other by name and there was a warm, congenial familiarity between the small group that truly made me feel that it was a safe place to, once again, begin my fitness journey.
Rick was friendly, firm, no-nonsense, knowledgeable, encouraging, and interested. No cheesy high-fives, no military style intimidation tactics. On Day One, he got me!
Oh! And note to self: don’t ever tell him something is easy or that you liked it. Your glutes will pay dearly for it. 🙂
In their new promotional video, it says ” in the battle between who I am and who I want to be….. I will be a warrior.”
Just call me Xena!
Who knows? Maybe someday, I’ll have guns!
Stay tuned. In the meantime, check out In-FIT Studios.
And in the spirit of Cheers, enjoy one of my favorite clips!
