For the past two years I have been impressed by the success of the Girls on the Run program in Washington County. What is GOTR? It is a program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We have heard from teachers, parents and the girls on the positive impact the program is having on each girl.
I have watched as the girls attend the first day and truly can’t believe that they will be able to run a 5k by the end. You can see the doubt, but also the excitement in their eyes. Last week we launched our Solemates Program for adults. The participant agrees to raise $300 and we provide training for them to complete a ½ marathon. As we were explaining the program I saw the same reactions from these women has I have seen in the girls. It made me wonder, does the girl inside of us ever overcome the doubt and worry?
Many of the women decided to accept the challenge and ignore the doubt. As a group we will encourage one another, laugh a lot, and complete the Western Maryland ½ marathon on September 15th. Like the girls, there are a lot of worries, but when we cross the finish line – no matter how long it takes – we will each experience the same sense of accomplishment the girls feel when they finish their 5k. There may even be a cartwheel or two!
